Something will occasionally knock your generator offline. You won't hear it conduct its weekly test, and it won't turn on if you need electricity in an emergency. Resetting your generator could be the solution. So how do you reset your Kohler generator?

Before resetting the controller, always determine and repair the reason for a fault shutdown. Then follow the instructions below:

  1. Look at the controller's fault message to see the problem and how to fix it.
  2. If service is required, contact the distributor/dealer.
  3. Remove the cover from your generator.
  4. Press the blue button to turn it off to reset your Kohler controller.
  5. To get to the Overview menu, hit the Select button while the fault notice is shown.
  6. Select once more. The active fault notice appears on the screen.
  7. A Fault on the Controller is being cleared.
  8. Select the option you want. Confirm that the Clear Fault: NO message is displayed.
  9. Press the down arrow button is pressed. Confirm that YES is indicated for Clear Fault.
  10. To clear the issue, press the Select button to enter YES.
  11. To return to the overview menu, use the Select button.
  12. The controller switches to the OFF position.
  13. Wait 30 seconds after pressing the OFF button. Push the blue RUN button next.
  14. The generator will either start or attempt to start three times. Allow it to begin if it so desires.
  15. After 5 minutes, press the blue OFF button to turn it off. Wait 30 minutes.
  16. Push the blue AUTO button once it has shut down for a few seconds.
  17. This button returns it to normal standby mode.

Troubleshooting a Kohler Generator

Kohler produces gas and diesel generators in a variety of sizes. The engines are generally dependable, but they may require troubleshooting and maintenance to keep them working properly. You can avoid mechanical difficulties with regular maintenance. However, heavy use in industrial applications might cause the engine to clog and parts to fail.

Troubleshooting is done in a few simple steps that only require a rudimentary understanding of mechanics. However, if the engine is severely damaged, it may need to be serviced or replaced by a specialist.

1. Start the Engine

Attempt to start the engine. Turn the switch to the "On" position and press the "Start" button or pull the starting rope to choke it partly. Check the battery power using a voltage meter if the engine is barely cranking before it dies. With a wire brush, clean all of the battery terminals and retest. If the battery isn't providing enough power, replace it with a new one.

2. Check the Oil Level

Clean the dipstick with a rag after removing it from the engine. Replace the dipstick in the engine and take it out to check the oil level once more. Remove the oil cap, insert a funnel, and fill the container with oil until it reaches the full line. The engine is likely low on oil if the generator is running yet emitting black smoke.

3. Remove and Replace the Spark Plugs

Remove the spark plugs' rubber covers. Using a deep socket wrench, remove and replace the plugs. Bad plugs can make it difficult to start the engine and cause sputtering while it's running. Kohler also suggests that the spark plugs be installed with a space. To make a gap, place a micrometer under the base of the plugs.

4. Replace the Air Filter

If the engine shuts down after a short time, replace the air filter. A clogged air filter causes a dirt backflow, which causes the engine to die. With a socket wrench, remove the panel that holds the filter in place and replace it. Remove the old air filter from the generator and replace it with the new one with your hands. Remove the panel and replace it.

5. Check the Gas Level

Check the gas level and locate the fuel tank. From the tank to the carburetor, follow the fuel line. Check for obstructions and crud in the carburetor. Remove the muck with a towel and clean the carburetor using carburetor cleaner.

If the engine sputters and acts as if it isn't getting enough fuel, the carburetor may be clogged. Kohler also advises that you examine your fuel supply for contaminants. The engine will sputter and backfire as a result of the water.

If the engine isn't producing electricity, replace the blown fuses. If fuses keep blowing, Kohler suggests inspecting the ground wires. An electrical short can be caused by faulty ground. The alternator may need to be replaced if the ground connections are securely linked to a metal surface.
