On Manhattan's lower west side, work is underway to build Pier 55, a public park and entertainment venue. The Diller-von Furstenberg family is the primary source of funding for this project, which is being led by a newly formed non-profit. They will supervise the pier's construction and operation in partnership with the Hudson River Park Trust. The pile fields of Piers 54 and 56 will remain intact to provide a fish habitat while the pier is being built.

The $170 million futuristic park on the west side of Manhattan was designed by Heatherwick Studio on behalf of Barry Diller. About 55 meters off the Hudson River shoreline, it would replace the dilapidated Pier 54 with a verdant, rolling environment held up by 300 mushroom columns. “Hudson River Park has become a destination for millions of New Yorkers from across all five boroughs,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “The revitalization and transformation of this pier into a vibrant arts and community space will bring new energy and new visitors to our waterfront.”

“New York City’s waterfront provides tremendous opportunities for everything from tourism to outdoor recreation, and Pier55 is the perfect example of how we can tap into that resource to build a more enjoyable city for all,” said Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. “Building this new pier will greatly improve the Hudson River Parkland, and I thank the Diller-von Furstenberg family for their generosity and vision in the pursuit of a better New York.”

Visitors will be able to explore the pier and discover new things every step of the way, including spots to relax, eat lunch, or simply lie in the grass. With its lush lawns and pathways, the park's undulating topography will give all park visitors sweeping views of the skylines of Manhattan and northern New Jersey. It will also serve as a natural viewing area for the new performance space, which is intended to become one of New York City's top venues for public art, dance, theater, music, and other events.

It is anticipated that work on the 2.7-acre pier would start in 2016.
