A hood for a gas stove or also referred to as range hood or kitchen exhaust hood, is an appliance that gets placed above the stove for the purpose of clearing the smoke, smell coming from food being cooked, steam and grease lingering in the air. Most of the hoods have a duct that works as the exhaust to the outer parts of the house.

There are varieties of range hoods with different designs and dimensions depending on the kind of kitchen they are installed in and other related factors. Examples of range hoods are wall mounted range hoods, downdraft island range hoods, under cabinet range hoods. They can be operated electrically and come with both a fan and light to aid in the illumination of the cooking area or they can be non-motorized with the use of natural ventilation.

Range hoods are an essential safety feature in the kitchen, as they help to remove harmful contaminants from the air and prevent them from accumulating in the home. They can also help prevent grease and grime on walls and surfaces near the stove.

It is not easy to choose a range hood for gas stoves, which is why we have done the research for you. The following are five types of range hoods we have tried and can recommend.

Best Range Hoods for Gas Stoves

We have bought many appliances and items for gas stoves, including woks for grillingkitchen pans, and other cookware sets, but nothing has been more daunting than buying the best range hoods. When buying these, we must consider many factors, but we found the type of hood, build, CFM, and ease of operation vital.

Here are our top picks.

1. Broan-NuTone 413004 Non-Ducted Ductless Range Hood

  • VERSATILE: Separate rocker switches control the light and the...
  • IDEAL SIZE: Range hood insert measures 30" and should be...

The Broan-NuTone 413004 is a non-ducted range hood that we highly recommend. Since it has a stainless steel body, it is easy to clean, and we also stick magnets holders on it for keeping gloves and other essentials nearby. As a non-ducted range hood, this model does not have a rated CFM, but from our experience, it does its job well.

We found the hood easy to install and loved how muted it looks under our cabinets. Besides filtering our indoor air, we also love the incandescent lighting it comes with that illuminates the cooking surface. It also uses charcoal filters, and we have to replace them regularly. That said, we found the range hood a bit noisy, and we had to buy a power cord separately as the hood is designed for hardwiring.

Pros:

  • Easy to install and operate
  • It comes with a replaceable charcoal filter
  • Stainless steel body that is easy to clean
  • It stays well hidden after installation
  • From a reputable brand
  • Powerful suction, even at the lowest level

Cons:

  • No rated CFM
  • A bit noisy
  • No power cord

We were thrilled to come across this hood that features permanent filters. Unlike our first recommendation above, these filters ensure we don't have to keep buying new ones, and the hood continues to function as new. However, the permanent filters also mean we must wash them regularly, so we love that they are dishwasher-safe.

This Cosmo is an under-cabinet vented range hood that fits well within any kitchen layout. In addition, it comes with energy-efficient, 1.5-watt LEDs that look amazing under the cabinet. We found the unit easy to install and loved the 500-CFM rating, which means that even at the lowest level, we still get powerful suction to eliminate smells and smoke.

Thanks to the backlit touchscreen, the range hood is also easy to control. Unfortunately, while it is a convertible range hood, we found it noisy even at the lowest setting.

Pros:

  • It comes with a stainless steel body, thus making it easy to clean
  • It is a convertible range hood that works with a ductless charcoal filter kit
  • It is designed for under the cabinet but can be wall mounted also
  • For ducted connection, the hood comes with dishwasher-safe permanent filters
  • Easy to install
  • Excellent CFM rating
  • Easy to control with a backlit touchscreen

Cons:

  • It is a bit noisy

  • 【Superior Filtration】: Includes 3 matching dishwasher safe...

We recommend this 36-inch Iktch range hood for kitchens with custom hood cabinetry. It is designed to go under the cabinet, and you can install it permanently if you wish. We found it easy to install, and it looked seamless under the cabinets. In addition, it has powerful suction thanks to a 900-CFM rating and is easy to turn on.

The only challenge we found with the convertible stainless steel range is the gesture-sensing function, which turns it on when you move your hand across and beneath the hood. We did not love that we turned it on when we didn't mean to, especially when cleaning the stove drip pans. While turning off the fans with a hand gesture is easy, we have to use the remote control to turn off its lighting.

Pros:

  • Easy to install and operate
  • Easy to clean
  • It is one of the best convertible range hoods
  • It is an under-cabinet range hood
  • Powerful suction with a 900-CFM rating
  • Quiet operation
  • It comes with dishwasher-safe stainless steel baffle filters

Cons:

  • Easy to turn on accidentally with the gesture sensor function

If you want a traditional kitchen theme, we recommend this wall-mount range hood that looks like a chimney. It is not designed to go under the cabinets, meaning the entire unit will be exposed after installation. That said, it is easy to install, and you can use it as a ducted or ductless range hood.

It comes in a stainless steel body with 2x baffle filters. In addition, it works with three fan speeds and has a CFM rating of 400. While we found the CFM rating relatively low, we were surprised by how well the range hood eliminates unpleasant smoke and smells in the kitchen. The only dealbreaker we found was a high vibration at the highest fan speed, which made the unit too noisy for comfort.

Pros:

  • Easy to install and operate
  • Powerful suction thanks to a 400-CFM rating
  • It is a convertible range hood
  • Easy-to-clean filters and stainless steel body
  • Works with three fan speeds

Cons:

  • Noisy operation

  • Whats in the Box This Range Hood package includes 1* 30 inch...

The Comfee’ CVU30W2AST 30-Inch Range Hood is one of the best options for those who wants a long-lasting, cheap and effective range hood for their kitchen. The sleek, stainless-steel construction fits well into most kitchens while the relatively small size means it can be used for both ducted and non-ducted ventilation. We would also like to emphasize that the design is very stylish and practical at the same time, which would be perfect for both small and large kitchens.

The Comfee’ CVU30W2AST has a stainless steel build that is not prone to rust and staining hence making it durable and easy to clean. The under-cabinet design is 30-inch wide is desirable for small kitchens, and the range hood has features such as dual-ducted and ductless compatibility. It uses a 200 CFM exhaust fan and has two speeds, which suffice most cooking processes and activities. The filters used are easily removable and are therefore reusable, thus the occasional need to replace them cuts down on extensive costs.

Pros:

  • Sleek, durable stainless-steel construction
  • Supports both ducted and ductless configurations
  • 200 CFM with two-speed settings for flexible venting
  • Reusable, easy-to-clean filters

Cons:

  • 200 CFM may be insufficient for heavy-duty cooking
  • Limited two-speed fan options

Factors to Consider When Buying the Best Range Hoods for Gas Stoves

Factors to Consider When Buying the Best Range Hoods for Gas Stoves

There are many factors to consider when choosing a hood for a gas stove, so here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for the best:

1. Size

Be sure that the hood you are purchasing has the proper dimensions for your stove. This means that if the hood is too small, it will not be able to clear smoke, cooking odors, and steam from the air appropriately, but if it is too big, it will over-power the rest of the kitchen and compete for attention.

The size of a range hood that is ideal for a gas stove varies with the size of the stoves as well as the design of the kitchen. Basically, a range hood should be wider than a stove and should hang approximately 3 inches wider than the sides of the burners. This will help to guarantee that the range hood should be in a position to pull smoke and odors of cooking as you cook.

2. Range Hood Lights

It is a good idea for a range hood to have lights, as they can help to illuminate the cooking surface. Range hood lights are typically installed under the hood and are aimed downward to provide direct lighting on the stovetop. Some cookstove hoods have a single light, while others have multiple lights to offer more coverage.

In addition to making it easier to see what you are cooking, range hood lights can also create a more inviting and welcoming atmosphere in the kitchen. They can be a valuable addition to any range hood and are especially helpful in smaller kitchens or those with limited natural light.

3. Ventilation

Consider how the hood will ventilate the air. Will it vent to the outside of your home, or will it recycle the air back into the kitchen? The choice will be between a ducted or ductless range hood.

Also called vented range hoods, ducted range hoods will lead smoke and odors away from your home. Ductless, recirculating, or non-vented range hoods will circulate the air back into your house after filtering. For the latter, you can choose a powerful hood range larger than your gas stove.

4. Style

As mentioned above, your hoods for gas stoves can come in different styles. Here is a brief overview of each kind:

  1. Traditional range hoods have a classic, timeless look and are often made of wood or feature intricate detailing and ornamentation. They are a good choice for kitchens with a traditional or vintage aesthetic.

  2. Modern range hoods have a sleek, contemporary look and are often made of stainless steel or other modern materials. They are a suitable choice for kitchens with a minimalistic or modern theme.

  3. Industrial range hoods have a rough, unfinished look and are often made of stainless steel or other industrial materials. They are ideal for kitchens with an industrial or urban aesthetic.

5. CFM

It means ‘cubic feet per minute’ and is a standard unit of the airflow in a ventilation system. When used in connection with range hoods, the term CFM describes the amount of air within a minute the hood circulates. A CFM rating measure the degree of air flow that the range hood is capable of handling and the higher the rating the better the range hood.

Kitchen exhaust fans with higher CFM show more efficiency in eliminating smoke, cook odors, and grease. When selecting a range hood for your gas stove, it’s essential to consider the following guidelines:

a) Stove Size

For a standard 30-inch gas stove, a range hood with a CFM rating of at least 400 is recommended. For a larger 36-inch stove, a range hood with a CFM rating of at least 600 is recommended.

b) Kitchen Layout

If your kitchen has an open floor plan or is connected to a dining area or living room, you may need a range hood with a higher CFM rating to decontaminate the air effectively.

c) Ventilation Type

If your range hood is vented to the outside of your home, you may get away with a lower CFM rating, as it will thoroughly remove the smoke and cooking odors from your home. If your range hood is non-vented and recirculates the air back into the kitchen, you may need a higher CFM rating to remove contaminants from the air.

d) Cooking Habits

If you love high-heat cooking, such as stir-frying or grilling, you may need a range hood with a higher CFM rating to clean the kitchen air.

6. Range Hood Filters

The best range hood filters for your gas range depend on the specific needs of your hood and the type of contaminants you are trying to remove from the air. Here are a few common types of range hood filters to know:

a) Mesh Filters

Mesh filters are made of metal or synthetic materials and are used to remove large particles from the air, such as grease and food debris. They are easy to clean and are a good choice for a kitchen with a lot of frying or grilling.

b) Carbon Filters

Carbon filters are made of activated carbon and are used to remove smells and fumes from the air. They are a good choice for kitchens that produce a lot of strong odors, such as those from cooking with strong spices or frying fish.

c) Charcoal Filters

Charcoal filters are made of activated charcoal to remove odors or fumes from the air. They are similar to carbon filters but are typically more effective at eliminating odors.

d) Baffle Filters

Baffle filters are made of metal and have a series of angled slats that deflect grease and food debris away from the filter surface.

7. Noise

Some hoods can be pretty loud, so if noise is a concern, look for a hood with a lower decibel rating.

Types of Range Hoods for Gas Stoves

Several types of hoods can be used with gas stoves, including:

  1. Chimney range hoods feature a vertical chimney that extends up from the stove and vents to the outside of the home. They are often used in kitchens with high ceilings.

  2. Island range hoods are installed on the ceiling and suspended above a kitchen island or peninsula. They are ideal for open floor plans where the stove is not against a wall.

  3. Wall-mounted range hood: the wall-mount range hood is fixed on the wall above the stove and vents to the outside of the home. It is a good choice for kitchens with limited ceiling space.

  4. Under-cabinet range hoods are mounted under a kitchen cabinet and vent to the outside of the home. They are suitable for smaller kitchens where a full-size hood might be too overpowering.

  5. Downdraft range hoods are mounted on the countertop or island and vent through the floor. They are ideal for kitchens with a limited wall or ceiling space.

  6. Range hood inserts: these hoods are installed inside a custom hood or cabinetry and are not visible from the outside.
